Powder-Free Chocolate Cherry Protein Smoothie

August 10, 2020
Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

Would you believe me if I told you that you can easily make a delicious plant-based smoothie with 20 grams of protein, without any protein powder? Yes! While protein powders are a great way to supplement the protein in your diet, sometimes its nice to only eat whole, pure foods.

Personally, I have nothing against protein powders and use them frequently – especially when I am eating a purely plant-based diet. I strength train 3 times a week and spin/run 2 times a week, therefore I supplement my diet with a protein powder immediately after my workout to help build muscle (remember – muscle helps burn fat!). However, I save the protein powders for the heavy workouts and like to drink this type of smoothie on my rest or recovery days.

This shake is naturally sweetened with fruit. Use an alternative milk that has a higher protein content such as soy or a pea protein milk. Hemp seeds add protein and are a superfood rich in Omega-3 and -6 fatty acids. Pure cacao powder adds the chocolate flavor and is rich in magnesium and iron. Oats add additional fiber. Cauliflower rice adds fiber and sulforaphane – an important antioxidant found in cruciferous vegetables (I also always like to add a bit of veggies to all my meals).

This would make a great breakfast, post-workout smoothie or afternoon snack. Make it into a smoothie bowl with a sprinkle of granola or extra cherries.

Simple, plant-based/vegan smoothie made only with whole foods. Chocolaty and naturally sweetened with fruit, it takes less than 5 minutes to prepare. Perfect for breakfast, post-workout or a snack!

  • Author: Jeannine
  • Prep Time: 5
  • Total Time: 5
  • Yield: 1 smoothie 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup Ripple unsweetened vanilla milk or unsweetened vanilla soy milk
  • 2 tablespoons cacao powder
  • 2 tablespoons hemp seed
  • 3/4 cup (about 10) pitted dark cherries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1/2 medium banana
  • 1/2 cup frozen cauliflower rice
  • 1/4 cup gluten-free oats
  • Optional: 1 medjool pitted date (to sweeten)
  • 1/2 cup ice

Instructions

  • In a high-speed blender, add all the ingredients and blend until creamy and smooth, scraping down sides as needed.
  • If you’d like a thinner smoothie, add 1/2 cup cold water.
  • Adjust flavor as needed (ie., add more cacao powder or option date if you would like sweeter)

Notes

  • Calorie information is without the date. Adding a date will add about 18 more grams of carbs and 60 more calories.

6 common mistakes you may be making that’s making healthy eating harder.

1. Thinking every meal has to be an elaborate recipe. Especially during the week I put together simple assembly line style meals (protein + grain + veggie + sauce) and make a few special recipes on the nights I’ll have more time. Keeping meals simple also were key during the periods I was trying to actively lose weight.

2. Spending hours on meal prep. Meal prep doesn’t have to mean 3 hours on Sunday with the same meals all week. Prep few components throughout on one day (extra protein, grains in the instant pot) and use the ingredients as a base for meals throughout the week.

3. Shopping for multiple individual recipes. All it takes is a few busy days at work or a sick kid and I have food going to waste in my fridge. Instead I think in components (ground beef, vegetables, grains) and have some go to “assembly line meals” I can adapt.

4. Not inderstanding portion sizes. I was eating healthy but once I spent time weighing/measuring my food and track it I saw where I was undereating (carbs) and overeating (fats!). I also realized I was eating way too much protein and not enough fiber.

5. Neglecting fiber. just because you eat a lot of vegetables doesn't necessarily mean you're taking in enough fiber. (vegetable salads aren’t a great source, ladies). Being more intentional about fiber with grains, seeds, fruit will help keep you satiated and improve digestion.

6. Overlooking the freezer. I noe make sure the freezer is always stocked with frozen pre-cut vegetables, rice and proteins. When possible, make extra of soups and sauces to quickly reheat. This ensures you can always pull together a quick healthy meal and avoids defaulting to take out.

The goal is a system that works in real life. Follow @livepowerfullyco for more ways to get strong, lean, energized and confident in midlife.

The Busy woman’s cheat sheet to changing your body in midlife. Here are six things that I stopped doing that made healthy eating easier and help me get leaner and stronger at 47.

1. Thinking every meal has to be an elaborate recipe. Especially during the week I put together simple assembly line style meals (protein + grain + veggie + sauce) and make a few special recipes on the nights I’ll have more time.

2. Spending hours on meal prep. Meal prep doesn’t have to mean 3 hours on Sunday with the same meals all week. I prep a few components throughout the day (extra protein, grains in the instant pot) and use ingredients throughout the week.

3. Planning individual recipes. All it takes is a few busy days at work or a sick kid and I have food going to waste in my fridge. Instead I think in components (ground beef, vegetables, grains) to put something together quickly.

4. Neglecting portion sizes. I was eating healthy but once I started to weigh my food and track it I saw where I was undereating (carbs) and overeating (fats!). You can be eating clean but macros + calories count too.

5. Neglecting fiber. When I experimented with tracking my food I saw I wasn’t taking in nearly enough fiber (vegetable salads aren’t a great source, ladies). Being more intentional about fiber helped improve my satiety and digestion.

6. Forgetting about the freezer. I make sure the freezer is always stocked with frozen pre-cut vegetables, rice and proteins. When possible, I made extra of soups and sauces to quickly reheat. This ensures I can always pull together a quick healthy meal and avoids defaulting to take out.

If you're overwhelmed by all the health advice for women over 40, comment HABITS and you can immediately download the Health Edit - with simple habits you can start today for immediate return, questions to bring to your doctor, and labs worth discussing.

Here's something I wish more women understood:
Not every healthy habit deserves the same amount of your time and energy.

Three intentional strength workouts may do more for your goals than five random classes.

Eating enough to support your activity may serve you better than cutting another 200 calories.

And an extra hour of sleep might be more valuable than another early morning workout.

The point isn't to do everything. It's to understand what your body needs now and focus your effort there.

That's the philosophy behind Live Powerfully. I help ambitious women in midlife cut through the wellness noise and build personalized strategies for strength, energy, and long-term health—without making wellness another full-time job.

Comment HABITS and let's get you started.

This is where I think so many high-achieving women in midlife get stuck....

We're used to believing that more effort + less calories equals better results. So when our bodies don't respond to that strategy anymore, we double down.

But here's what I wish I'd understood sooner: if your whole goal is just to burn calories, you aren't building anything that is gonna support your metabolism in a long-term.

If you want to build muscle, you need a plan that challenges your muscles progressively (Ps - that doesn't always mean lifting heavier weights, but we'll get to that in another post.)

You need enough food to support that work.

And you need recovery so your body can actually adapt.

It's not about abandoning cardio or never being in a calorie deficit. It's about understanding how all the pieces work together instead of treating each workout like a transaction for calories in and out.

**This is exactly what I help women do through Live Powerfully.**

We look at your nutrition, strength training, recovery, and the realities of your schedule to build a personalized health strategy that supports your goals without making wellness another full-time job.

Because you've already built a big life. Your health strategy should help you live it.

Follow @LivePowerfullyCo for less wellness noise and more of what actually works.
