Start and end your days with this spicy lemon ginger tea!
Do you have a morning health ritual? The first thing I do every morning is drink 24 ox of water and drink a cup of homemade lemon ginger team BEFORE my coffee.
Drinking water in the morning may sound like an obvious “health tip” but most people I know say they first thing they do is reach for coffee or a caffieinated tea. So today I’m sharing with you the simple recipe and benefits of this spicy lemon ginger team, but also why its so important to hydrate first thing in the morning!
The Benefits of Hydration
Overnight our bodies lose a lot of water. When your body isn’t hydrated properly, it doesn’t work properly. Drinking water first thing in the morning will give your body a head start on being hydrated which we know is important for:
- Glowing skin
- Boosting metabolism
- Aiding digestion
- Improving energy levels
If you work out first thing in the morning then its incredibly critical you drink at least 24 ounces of water (or more!) before you start working out. It may sound like a lot but you can sip water as you get ready. If you aren’t properly hydrated you are likely going to feel incredibly sluggish.
While I’ve had this practice of drinking lemon or water in the mornings for a few years now, I added this homemade lemon ginger tea to my routine when I had COVID and now by body craves this spicy morning cocktail.
What are the Benefits of Lemon Ginger Tea?
The star of this tea is of course the ginger. Did you know that ginger is a SUPERFOOD that has been shown to:
- have powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties
- in clinical studies, has shown to have anticancer properties
- boost overall immunity
- help manage symptoms of cold and flu
- soothe your stomach (fight nausea and bloating)
Lemons of course not only taste great but:
- provide vitamin C
- helps improve skin quality
- aids in digestion
How to Make Lemon Ginger Tea (Tips!)
Before I go to bed, I like to grate about 2 niche of ginger (about 2 tablespoons) and add it a large glass or water bottle with 16 ounces of water to infuse overnight. In the morning:
- Bring the water to a boil
- Turn off the heat
- Add half a lemon
- Strain into a cup
- Add raw honey, if desired
If you forgot to infuse the water overnight, grate the ginger, bring to a boil and let simmer for about 5 minutes before adding the lemon.
Lemon ginger tea also makes for a great pre-bedtime drink. I also like to drink it when my stomach is feeling sour.
I hope you feel healthspired!

Notes
I’ve used jarred, grated ginger but raw ginger will have stronger antioxidant properties and I’ve found the jarred ginger doesn’t yield the same spiciness.
