June 8, 2020
Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

This simple and vibrant blue smoothie bowl is made with one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the earth. Its a delicious protein-packed way to start your day or for a snack.

A blue smoothie bowl made with Blue Majik spirulina and topped with kiwis, blueberries, bananas and coconut flakes.
Blue Smoothie Bowl

About Spirulina

Spirulina is a powder that is derived from algae. The powder can either be green or blue. Blue and green spirulina are derived from different species of algae. Green spirulina powder comes from chlorophyll and blue spirulina powder comes from phycocyanin. Both blue spirulina and green spirulina are nutrient-dense and offer various vitamins, minerals and is a great source of vegan protein.

What are the Benefits of Blue Spirulina?

Blue spirulina contains a powerful antioxidant pigment called phycocyanin, which is responsible for its distinct blue hue. It offers numerous potential health benefits such as:

  • Phycocyanin has powerful antioxidants that help protect cells against oxidative stress and damage caused by free radicals. Some studies suggest that blue spirulina can aid in post-workout recovery and reduce exercise induced stress and damage
  • Micronutrients B6 and Vitamin C which helps combat disease and infections.

How to use Spriulina?

Spirulina can be smoothies, smoothie bowls (like this one!), sauces, dressings and other beverages. You an also mix into pancake, waffles or cookies to make them blue!

Blue Majik Smoothie Bowl Ingredients

  • Cauliflower rice – Cauliflower is a cruciferous vegetable that is high in fiber and B-vitamins. Nutrition experts recommend we eat cruciferous vegetables everyday. Its a great way to increase the nutritional content of your smoothies and thicken them without adding extra sugar.
  • Blue Majik spirulina – There are different kinds of blue spirulina but Blue Majik is a proprietary extract of spirulina from E3 Live.
  • Chia seeds – These little seeds contain all of the omegas (3,6 and 9), protein, healthy fat, fiber and also helps thicken your smoothies and smoothie bowls.
  • Banana – Provides creaminess for the smoothie bowl.
  • Protein powder – To help balance blood sugar make this a complete meal this recipe includes vegan protein powder.
  • Blueberries – Another antioxidant powerhouse which also adds fiber.
  • Kiwis – Kiwis have also been shown to reverse DNA damage to your cells!

How to Make This Blue Smoothie Bowl

Step 1: Soak 1 tablespoon of chia seeks with 3/4 cup of nut milk overnight (or for at least 1 hour)

Step 2: In a high-speed blender, blend together chia seed mixture, frozen cauliflower rice, frozen banana, vanilla protein powder and spirulina.

Step 3: Pour into a bowl and top with kiwi, blueberries, bananas and coconut flakes

Tip for Making a Smoothie Bowl and Substitutions

  • Keep it thick. At first the mixture may be very thick. Keep adding water 1 tablespoon at a time until the mixture blends. You want the mixture to be thick enough to blend and not watery (depending on your blender, this may involve stop/starting the blender and pushing down the mixture).
  • Add your favorite protein. This recipe would taste great with either vanilla unsweetened protein or an unflavored protein.
  • Vary your toppings. I like kiwis, blueberries, bananas and coconut but you can add granola or other fruits.

Storage

Smoothie bowls are best eaten immediately.

"I'm working out and not seeing results.” - I hear this all the time. It usually comes down to 4 things (I was guilty of all 4!)

1. Expecting workouts to do nutrition’s job.
A workout burns less than you think, often 5 to 10% of your daily total. Daily movement and how you eat matter more. Track your food for three days to find the gaps.

2. Not lifting heavy enough.
Muscle grows anywhere from 5 to 30 reps, as long as you finish within 1 to 3 reps of failure. Burning and shaking feel strenuous but isn't enough to build muscle. If you could do eight more, go heavier. Lifting to failure means you can’t do another rep without your form breaking down.

3. Doing mostly combo moves instead of compound lifts.
A compound lift moves more than one joint and works several muscles at once: squats, deadlifts, rows, push-ups, overhead presses. A combo stacks two moves together, like a squat into an overhead press. The weight is capped by what your shoulders can press, so your legs never get challenged enough. Do them separately and go heavier on each for a more effective workout.

4. Skipping recovery.
Muscle is built in the days after you lift. HIIT or excessive cardio on every off day, plus short sleep, and an unregulated nervous system leaves your body nothing to rebuild with. Walk more. Sleep more. Eat protein and enough carbs.

Note: you shouldn't give up heart healthy cardio up completely, you just need to make sure you are sequencing it in such a way that you have recovery time as well.

Three focused strength sessions done right a week can get you further than 5/6 or 7 exhausting ones.

Not sure where to start? Comment REBUILD and I’ll send you my free guide with a full body workout you can do in under 30 minutes, plus the sleep, fuel, and recovery habits that make it work.

Tell me: Which slide felt like a personal attack?

You’ve spent most of your adult life believing that if something isn't working, you can figure it out. Research more. Work harder. Find a better solution.

And honestly? That approach has probably served you pretty well. Until your 40s.

Suddenly, the things that used to work aren't delivering the same results. Your body is changing, your schedule is packed, and you're trying to figure out why you're putting in so much effort without seeing the progress you expect.

So you do what you've always done.
You double down.

But here's what I've learned: More effort isn't always the answer. Sometimes you need a different strategy.
One that accounts for what's changing in your body AND the reality of your life.

That means knowing when to push and when to recover. Having a nutrition plan that works on Wednesday at 6 PM, not just Sunday afternoon. And understanding which habits actually move the needle instead of trying to do everything.

Because the goal isn't to become less ambitious.
It's to bring that ambition to your health in a smarter way.
