About Spirulina
Spirulina is a powder that is derived from algae. The powder can either be green or blue. Blue and green spirulina are derived from different species of algae. Green spirulina powder comes from chlorophyll and blue spirulina powder comes from phycocyanin. Both blue spirulina and green spirulina are nutrient-dense and offer various vitamins, minerals and is a great source of vegan protein.
What are the Benefits of Blue Spirulina?
Blue spirulina contains a powerful antioxidant pigment called phycocyanin, which is responsible for its distinct blue hue. It offers numerous potential health benefits such as:
- Phycocyanin has powerful antioxidants that help protect cells against oxidative stress and damage caused by free radicals. Some studies suggest that blue spirulina can aid in post-workout recovery and reduce exercise induced stress and damage
- Micronutrients B6 and Vitamin C which helps combat disease and infections.
How to use Spriulina?
Spirulina can be smoothies, smoothie bowls (like this one!), sauces, dressings and other beverages. You an also mix into pancake, waffles or cookies to make them blue!

How to Make This Blue Smoothie Bowl
Step 1: Soak 1 tablespoon of chia seeks with 3/4 cup of nut milk overnight (or for at least 1 hour)
Step 2: In a high-speed blender, blend together chia seed mixture, frozen cauliflower rice, frozen banana, vanilla protein powder and spirulina.
Step 3: Pour into a bowl and top with kiwi, blueberries, bananas and coconut flakes
Tip for Making a Smoothie Bowl and Substitutions
- Keep it thick. At first the mixture may be very thick. Keep adding water 1 tablespoon at a time until the mixture blends. You want the mixture to be thick enough to blend and not watery (depending on your blender, this may involve stop/starting the blender and pushing down the mixture).
- Add your favorite protein. This recipe would taste great with either vanilla unsweetened protein or an unflavored protein.
- Vary your toppings. I like kiwis, blueberries, bananas and coconut but you can add granola or other fruits.
